Feature · Claude and ChatGPT connector

Ask Claude or ChatGPT about your own invoices.

Yes, Claude and ChatGPT can answer questions about your real invoices. Inbill has a read-only connector (an MCP server) that you add to either app as a custom connector. You approve it once on an Inbill page. It can read your invoices, quotes, clients, payments and expenses, and it cannot create, send or change anything. It is part of Pro.

Which clients still have to pay me this month?

Two clients still have to pay you:

  • Hamza Motors: Rs 25,000, INV-2026-0301, 5 days overdue.
  • Northwind Studio: $1,200, INV-2026-0305, due 15 Nov.

Read from Inbill. It can't change or send anything.

Setup

How to connect it

  1. In Inbill, open Settings, then AI, and tap Copy address. The connector address is a web address that ends in /functions/v1/mcp. Copy it from Settings instead of typing it.
  2. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, choose Add, then Add custom connector, and paste the address. In ChatGPT, add it as a custom MCP server. Each app's help pages list the current steps.
  3. The AI app sends you to Inbill. Sign in if you are asked, read the page that says "Connect [app name] to Inbill?", and tap Allow. You go back to the AI app and can start asking.

If Inbill does not recognise the app that is asking, the approval page shows a warning and the website it will send you back to. Only allow it if you started the connection yourself.

Questions

What you can ask

  • "Which invoices are overdue?"
  • "How much did I receive in October?"
  • "Which quotes are still waiting for an answer?"
  • "Does Ali have any credit with me?"
  • "What did I spend on software this month?"
  • "What is my profit this month?"
  • "When does my next recurring invoice go out?"

The connector tells the AI app to keep amounts in different currencies apart and to keep quotes separate from money that is due. It can read what you keep in Inbill, such as invoices, quotes, clients, products and services, payments, expenses, recurring schedules and your business details.

Limits

What it can never do

The connector has reading tools only. It cannot create, edit, send or delete an invoice, record a payment or change your settings. This is enforced on Inbill's servers: any change that comes from a connected app's sign-in is refused, whatever the AI app asks for.

It is still your business data. Allowing an app "works like signing in as you", as the approval page says, so connect only apps you trust. Once the AI app has an answer, its own privacy policy and data settings decide what happens to it. Inbill cannot control that.

When you want the AI to do the work, use the assistant inside Inbill. It can draft invoices, record payments and add expenses, and in the chat each change appears as a card you check and apply. See the AI invoice generator.

Control

See and disconnect connected apps

Settings, then AI, lists every app you have allowed and the date you allowed it. Tap Disconnect and the connector stops answering that app straight away. You can connect it again later by repeating the steps above.

Plan

Part of Pro

The connector is a Pro feature ($5 a month). If you are on Free, Settings explains it, and an AI app that tries to connect is told it needs Pro. The assistant inside Inbill works on every plan. Read Can ChatGPT make invoices? for what ChatGPT can do on its own.

Questions people ask

Can ChatGPT create invoices in Inbill?

No. The connector only reads. ChatGPT can still write the text of an invoice by itself, but it cannot save, send or change anything in Inbill. To create an invoice by typing or speaking, use the assistant inside Inbill. In the chat it shows each change as a card you check and apply.

What is an invoice MCP server?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI apps such as Claude and ChatGPT connect to outside data and tools. An invoice MCP server lets the AI app look up your invoices when you ask. Inbill's server offers reading tools only.

Which AI apps does it work with?

Claude and ChatGPT, added as a custom connector (ChatGPT calls it a custom MCP server). Claude Code and Cursor can use the same address. Each AI app decides which of its own plans allow custom connectors, so check its help pages.

Is it safe to give ChatGPT access to my invoices?

Inbill refuses every change that comes from a connected app, so it cannot edit, send or delete anything. It can read your business data, including client names and amounts. The approval page says allowing an app "works like signing in as you", so connect only apps you trust. What the AI app does with the answers is covered by that app's own data policies, not ours.

How do I disconnect it?

In Inbill, open Settings, then AI, and tap Disconnect next to the app. The connector stops answering that app straight away. You can also remove the connector inside Claude or ChatGPT.

Is the connector free?

It is part of Pro ($5 a month). On the free plan, the AI app gets a message that connecting is a Pro feature. The assistant inside Inbill is on every plan, with 20 messages a day on Free.
