Can ChatGPT make invoices? What it can do, and what it can't

ChatGPT can write an invoice, but on its own it cannot keep your numbering, see who has paid or follow up. How connectors (MCP) let ChatGPT and Claude read your real invoices, and how to do it safely.

Short answer: yes, ChatGPT can make an invoice: the layout, the line items and the total. On its own, though, it does not keep your invoice numbers in order, cannot see who has paid, and cannot send the invoice or follow up. To answer from your real records, it needs a connector to your invoicing app. Check every total before you send it.

What ChatGPT can do on its own

  • Write the text of an invoice from a short description of the job.
  • Lay out line items in a table and add them up.
  • Suggest payment terms, a late-fee line or a thank-you note.
  • Write a polite reminder for an invoice that is late.

That is useful for a first invoice or an unusual one. Copy the result into a document, check the maths and the dates, add your payment details, and save it as a PDF.

What it cannot do on its own

A chat does not keep business records. Without a connection to an invoicing app, ChatGPT does not know your last invoice number, so it cannot keep your numbering in sequence. It does not know which invoices are paid, partly paid or late. It cannot give your client a link to pay from, and it cannot send reminders when the due date passes. Each of those needs a place where your invoices are stored.

Can ChatGPT see my unpaid invoices?

Only if you connect it to the app where your invoices live. The usual way now is MCP, the Model Context Protocol: "an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems". An invoicing app that offers an MCP server lets ChatGPT or Claude ask it questions, such as which invoices are overdue, and answer from the real data.

What a connector can do depends on the app. Zoho Invoice's MCP, for example, lets AI models "create invoices, look up customer details, or send payment reminders". Inbill's connector is read-only: it answers questions and cannot create, send or change anything.

Adding one takes a few steps in the AI app. In Claude, Anthropic's help page describes adding a custom connector by pasting the server's address. In ChatGPT, OpenAI's developer docs describe adding a custom MCP server and note that account and workspace policies apply.

Is it safe to give ChatGPT access to my invoices?

It can be, if you check a few things first. Your invoices hold your clients' names, amounts and sometimes addresses, so treat the connection like sharing a login.

  • Can it change things? A read-only connector cannot edit, send or delete. One that can write needs more care.
  • Do you approve it? A good connector sends you to your invoicing app's own page to sign in and allow it. You should never paste your password into the chat.
  • Can you switch it off? You should be able to see every connected app and disconnect it from your invoicing app's settings.
  • Who built it? Anthropic warns that custom connectors "allow you to connect Claude to arbitrary services that have not been verified by Anthropic". Use the connector your invoicing app publishes itself.
  • What happens to the answers? Once the AI app has your data in a chat, its own privacy settings and policies apply. Check them, especially on a work account.

How it works in Inbill

Inbill has a read-only connector for Claude and ChatGPT. Copy the connector address from Settings, then AI, add it to the AI app as a custom connector, and tap Allow on the Inbill page that asks "Connect [app name] to Inbill?". That page also says allowing an app "works like signing in as you", so connect only apps you trust.

Then ask things like "Which invoices are overdue?", "What did I spend on software this month?" or "Does Ali have any credit with me?". Any attempt to change data through the connector is refused by Inbill's servers. Settings, then AI, lists connected apps, and Disconnect stops the connector answering that app straight away. The connector is part of Pro ($5 a month). Full details are on the Claude and ChatGPT connector page.

To create invoices by chat, use the assistant inside Inbill. Type or say "Invoice Brightwater Cafe 450 dollars for menu design, due in 14 days" and, in the chat, it shows a card to check before anything is saved. It is on every plan, with 20 messages a day on Free. See the AI invoice generator.

If you only want ChatGPT to draft one invoice

Give it everything it cannot guess. A prompt like this works:

Make an invoice table. From: Northwind Studio, Lahore. To: Sara Khan, Brightwater Cafe, London. Invoice number INV-0042, dated 31 October 2026, due 14 November 2026, in US dollars. Lines: menu design, 1, $450; social media graphics, 6, $25 each. No tax. Add a total and a short thank-you line.

Then check the total yourself, add your bank, Wise or Payoneer details, and save it. For a single PDF without signing up, the free invoice generator does the maths for you. When you want each invoice to number itself and show what is still unpaid, use an invoicing account.

Frequently asked

Can ChatGPT create invoices?

Yes, ChatGPT can write an invoice with line items and a total. On its own it does not keep your numbering, track payments or send the invoice, so check the maths and use an invoicing app for records.

Can ChatGPT see my unpaid invoices?

Only if you connect it to your invoicing app with a connector, usually an MCP server the app provides. Without one, ChatGPT has no access to your invoices.

Is it safe to give ChatGPT access to my invoices?

It can be. Prefer a read-only connector, approve it on your invoicing app's own page, make sure you can disconnect it, and check the AI app's privacy settings, because they decide what happens to the answers.

Is there an MCP server for invoices?

Yes, some invoicing apps offer one. Zoho Invoice has an MCP that can create invoices and send reminders. Inbill has a read-only connector for Claude and ChatGPT on Pro.

Can Claude connect to Inbill?

Yes. Add Inbill's connector address as a custom connector in Claude, then allow it on the Inbill page. It can read your invoices, quotes, clients, payments and expenses, and it cannot change them.
